As Brisbane residents we’re blessed with year round sunshine (most of the time), which means the chances of making the most of your day outdoors, are high. Especially when there’s a special occasion, there’s no better way to spend a perfect afternoon with some awesome company, a basket of snacks, cold beverages, and your own picnic rug. From gorgeous parks, and scenic riverfront areas, take time out to explore Brisbane’s top picnic spots.

1. Kangaroo Point Cliffs

Kangaroo Point Cliffs, from the top or the bottom could arguably be the best spot for a picnic in all of Brisbane. Expansive views of the city skyline and river, there’s plenty of spots along the top of the cliffs and barbecues, gazebos, as well as areas below to appreciate all the riverfront tranquility.

2. Captain Burke Park

Nestled at the base of the Story Bridge this park has a grassy expanse dotted with picnic tables, barbecues, shelters and amenities, as well as views of the vibrant Howard Smith Wharves.

3. New Farm Park

If you’ve been around Brisbane long enough, you’ve most likely experienced the markets at New Farm, or spent an afternoon chilling against the backdrop of beautiful purple blooms of the jacarandas in Spring. New Farm Park has a myriad of perfect spots, whether you're looking out over the river, or enjoying the peaceful surrounds of the “greenery”.

4. Roma Street Parklands

A subtropical wonderland, and the site of many regular events, Roma St Parklands is a brilliant place for enjoying a picnic amongst the cascade lawns, or enjoying the explosion of colour from the beautiful gardens.

5. Mount Cootha Lookout & Botanical Gardens

Not only can you take in a panoramic view of Brisbane from Mount Coot-tha lookout, you can easily bring along your rug, and find a perfect spot for a picnic. Go by day for the picturesque backdrop or visit at night the added romance of starry skies and views of the city lights. There’s also the option of heading down to the foot of the mountain, and stopping by the Botanical Gardens. Spanning over 52 hectares and open every day of the year, you can marvel at the cherry blossom in the Japanese garden, and bring your picnic at one of the allocated spots in the gardens.

6. City Botanic Gardens

An escape from the hustle of the city, nestled between the river on one side and QUT and Government house on the other, the 45 acre City Botanic Gardens is a beautiful getaway in the heart of the CBD. A sanctuary from where you can sit on secluded benches, gaze at ponds and stroll around enjoying the plentiful flora all year-round.

7. Southbank Parklands

You’ll be spoilt for choice at Southbank, with so many awesome places to picnic and with one of the best being River Quay. A perfect grassy spot from which to enjoy the uninterrupted views of the city skyline, right by the river. If that wasn’t enough try some of the surrounding restaurants, or Popolo Italian Kitchen & Bar and they’ll do pack a picnic hamper for you, if you haven’t prepared your own.

8. Highgate Hill Park

If Mount Coot-tha is just a stretch far, then Highgate Hill Park Lookout boasts equally impressive views, but away from the tourists. Highgate Hill Park Lookout consists of a gazebo located 62m above sea level, overlooking Brisbane's impressive skyline. The gazebo itself is pretty amazing, complementing the views, as well as providing shade in the warmer months. There’s also plenty of shady spots on the grassy area from where you can laze about on your rug, enjoying the fresh air.
