Michelin-Star Chef returns home to Brisbane at The Greek Club's Nostimo Restaurant
Greek Island holidays may not be on the horizon any time soon, but The Greek Club’s new Nostimo chef in residence is serving up the closest thing to it.
One of Brisbane’s best internationally renowned chef exports, Alex Xinis, has teamed up with the city’s most iconic Greek restaurant, Nostimo, to put Brisbane on the map for creating the highest quality Greek cuisine, in its simplest, most beautiful and authentic form.
After years spent living and working abroad, Xinis, has come literally and figuratively full circle - returning as Head Chef in Residence at the award-winning Greek restaurant Nostimo within The Greek Club - the same humble community he grew up surrounded by that’s grown to become one of the most iconic culinary and events venues in Brisbane. While Xinis brings his years of experience working as Head Chef for Michelin Star restaurants globally, he’s stripping back more to his humble roots that pays homage to simple and refined greek cuisine reflecting his upbringing and stays with family in Athens and Ithaki, Greece.
Responding to our collective hunger for international travel, Xinis and the team are giving us the closest thing to what feels and tastes like a slice of Greece in the heart of Brisbane. The menu showcases items such as Feta Bouyiourdi, a spicy baked feta with peppers, onion, tomato, or the Htapodi, ocotopus cooked in wine, as well as Traditional Spanakopita and the ever popular Loukoumades (honey puffs) with snickers.
“We may not be able to travel abroad, so we’re all craving tastes of overseas in our lives - and that’s what we’re passionate about creating here. Great service shouldn’t mean a heftily priced menu. Yes, there are great Greek restaurants in Brisbane. But our new menu will bring Greek food back to its humble roots, giving our diners an experience, they just can’t get anywhere else in Brisbane” said Xinis.
Nostimo and The Greek Club are one of Brisbane’s most architecturally unique spaces – thanks to the stunning Cycladic architecture inspired renovation led by KP Architects in 2018. From the soft blue, light and terracotta tones and archways symbolic of the Cyclades islands, skyline balcony views over the city, to the spine-tingling ceiling of Nostimo’s entry and private dining room, featuring thousands of cascading komboloi (Greek worry beads) – each hung individually by staff and community members – the space is filled with beauty, history, culture and stories.
